Becoming a Suicide Prevention Volunteer

There are many organizations that are doing incredible things in terms of suicide prevention. Most of these great organizations offer many different ways in which you can volunteer your time. Feel free to search through as many as you like until you find the one that is right for you and begin your journey to becoming a volunteer today.

LIFELINE is made up of an network of over 150 local- and state-funded crisis centers located across the United States. You can volunteer by contacting a local center. Find the center closest to you on Lifeline's crisis center map. 

IMHURTING is based in Washington and all chat training and actual chatting takes place in Everett, Washington. Remote volunteering is not an option at this time. Visit our website for more details.

COMMON GROUND:  Learn how you can help move people from crisis to hope. We provide extensive training to qualified volunteers interested in staffing our Resource & Crisis Helpline or Youth Residential Programs.

DHMHS: Becoming a volunteer crisis counselor is one of the most intense but rewarding ways you can contribute to the community. We need your help to staff our 24-hour Crisis Line and its online Crisis Chat.

GLBT NATIONAL HELP CENTERWe search for volunteers who are very good listeners, are very non-judgmental and who are comfortable talking with callers about difficult issues they are dealing with. Remote 
volunteering available.

IMALIVE: provides a rewarding online volunteer opportunity, with a flexible schedule and valuable life saving skills. Volunteer from anywhere, as long as you have a computer/laptop and a reliable broadband internet connection.

IOWA CRISIS CHAT volunteers learn counseling techniques and offer support to clients in need. Our training prepares people who have gone on to become therapists, social workers, teachers, lawyers, clergy, doctors, and even genetic counselors.

LICC All you need to start is the desire to help and just a little spare time! You do not need any previous experience. LICC provides a free, comprehensive training program to all volunteers.

MHASF: MHASF depends on the support of talented and enthusiastic volunteers to help out with a wide array of ongoing needs and special projects. 

THE TREVOR PROJECT: In order to provide life-saving support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) youth, The Trevor Project recruits passionate volunteers to staff our crisis intervention services.

TEENLINE: Want to become a TeenLine Listener? To qualify, you must live in the LA area, be at least 14yrs old, and in or entering the 9th – 11th grade (Fall of 9th grade is the first eligible training period and Summer after the 10th grade is the last eligible training period).

NYC WELL: Begin a rewarding career helping New Yorkers get the support they need. We are always looking for talented people interested in a career in mental health. Here you can find a variety of paying mental health jobs or contact for volunteer info.

By volunteering with us, you will give help and hope to peers going through a hard time. Plus, there’s free snacks and it looks great on your resume! You must be age 15-20 and live in the Central Oregon Tri-County Area or the Portland Metro Area.
